Makeup History

Egyptian Makeup

The Egyptian men and women both wore makeup, they used it for both cosmetic and medical reasons. It was used just to make the eyes more defined.

The eye makeup they used was called Kohl, the Egyptian Physicians prescribed kohl to help prevent eye diseases, the kohl was made from galena which had disinfectant qualities. It shielded their eyes against the sun and was a deterrent to flies. It was also used for  religious, magical and traditional reasons.

The Green eye makeup was made from the green pigment called malachite, it was crushed then used as eye makeup.

The cheek and lip makeup was made from the pigment red ochre made from naturally tinted clay, it has also been used since prehistoric times. It was mined from the ground, washed then dried in the sun or sometimes burned to enhance the natural colour. It was used to stain their lips and cheeks.

The nail polish and hair color was made from a form of henna. Its a dye from the leaves and shoots of the henna shrub, they henna leaves are dried, ground and sifted then made into a paste with water. It was then used to dye and stain their nails.
